Capitalization of error messages is a difficult point. The trend seems to be that a complete sentence, ending with a period, should also start with a capital. When an error message has a telegraphic style, is not a complete sentence ending with a period, it might better start with a lower case letter.
GNU standards seem to be a little fuzzy on this topic, and the justification for what it suggests is hard to guess.
