Finance::Shares::CGI ==================== This package provides a CGI interface to the Finance::Shares toolkit. It comprises a number of scripts and a support module. Note that installation requires some manual steps as well as the normal make commands. !!! CAUTION !!! This is a demo only. It is possible to send the cgi process into an infinite loop, so DON'T put it on a public http server. This interface necessitates late binding of functions and tests but no checking is made for circular references because they are not possible from the scripts. INSTALLATION ============ STEP 1: Edit the CGI.pm file to tailor it to your system sub new { my $class = shift; my $o = { ## === edit these START === user => 'test', # mysql user password => 'test', # mysql password database => 'test', # mysql database base_cgi => 'http://hawk.home.net/cgi-bin/shares', base_url => 'http://hawk.home.net/shares', base_dir => '/srv/www/htdocs/shares', webmaster => 'webmaster@willmot.org.uk', ## === edit these END === The user, password and database are best left as they are for the first trial as they match the settings used in the Finance::Shares::Overview instructions. base_cgi Root part of the URL used to access the cgi scripts from a browser. I've been using cgi-bin because cgi-perl is a pain to develop with, but it works ok with either. base_url Root part of the URL used to access the normal html documents. base_dir This should be the path to the directory holding the normal html documents. index.html will be written here. webmaster I would be grateful if you would change this if it goes onto a live site! STEP 2: Install module The usual incantation may now be made to install the module. 'make test' is trivial and tells you nothing useful. perl Makefile.PL make make install STEP 3: Copy the files Now you have decided where the files will go, copy all the files in the cgi directory into your working cgi directory (e.g. the one known to apache as cgi-bin, cgi-perl). Copy all the files in html/ to your html directory. STEP 4: Make index.html From the package directory give the command 'make_index' which should write the index.html file to your html directory. [Note that this needs access to CGI.pm, if you are doing things differently.] STEP 5: Initialize the database The rest of the installation is carried out from your brower. Enter a URL similar to this one. [I have my development version in the 'shares' subdirectory of the apache server on hawk.home.net.] http://hawk.home.net/cgi-bin/shares/init.pl?initialize=1 Choose 'list' if you're curious, or everything else (users, tables, layouts, prompts, all) to initialize the database. [If you already have data in the database, it will mostly remain untouched. However, if you have been using a previous version of Finance::Shares::CGI, any user information (choices, login etc) will be lost.] STEP 6: Register as a user a) Type in the url for index.html, e.g. http://hawk.home.net/shares/index.html b) Choose a login. Your settings will be saved under that name. NOTES ===== To administer the database, enable the 'admin' option from 'User levels' on the menu. There is no utility for removing names from the database, so don't add more than you need. Resetting with the 'Initialize tables' option is the only possibility. There is probably some residual support for text-only browsers, but I haven't tested it since taking out the DHTML stuff. This is likely to be the last version I produce of a CGI interface for Finance::Shares. My interest lies in developing a script toolkit, and this is too peripheral. - Chris Willmot COPYRIGHT AND LICENCE ===================== Copyright (C) 2002, 2003 Christopher P Willmot.
