The Indexer part of Metabase will be a Solr server. Solr is a web
interface to Lucene. It is powerful and flexible and meets our needs
very well.

To set it up:

wget http://www.apache.org/dist/lucene/solr/1.3.0/apache-solr-1.3.0.tgz
tar fzx apache-solr-1.3.0.tgz
cp solr/schema.xml apache-solr-1.3.0/example/solr/conf/
cd apache-solr-1.3.0/example/
java -jar start.jar

This starts up Solr. You can browse the web interface at:

http://localhost:8983/solr/admin/

To try out the Perl interface:

perl solr/solr_insert.pl
perl solr/solr_search.pl roman_s:MCIX
