Short: RXvt-2.8 reduced memory and size XTerm with enhancements Type: X11/shells Original Author: jdb@ukc.ac.uk (John Bovey) Author: nation@rocket.sanders.lockheed.com (Rob Nation) Uploader: cjr6@ukc.ac.uk (Chris Rainbow) Requirements: XFree68-3.2, Linux/m68k 2.0.x (1.2.x too maybe, but not tested) and libXpm-4.7 (available from uni-erlangen) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Extract from original RXvt-2.8 docs : Rxvt is a heavily modified version of xvt, many modifications were made by Rob Nation to make it a little more compact and to add a few simple features. This is the README that came with xvt-2.0. It is included mainly to give the original author credit for his work. README file for xvt 2.0 ----------------------- Xvt is an X terminal-emulator that is designed to be more or less compatible with xterm while using much less swap space. It is mainly intended for use at sites which use large numbers of X terminals but may also be useful on single workstations that are short of memory. On a SPARCstation running SunOS4, an initially invoked xvt uses about 1/3 megabyte of swap while xterm uses about 1.3 megabytes (obtained by running pstat rather than ps which seems to give unreliable size figures on SPARCs). The main way that xvt achieves its small size is by avoiding the use of the X toolkit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is an 'almost-no-changes' version of RXvt-2.8 for Linux/m68k with XFree68-3.2. It may work with other configurations but hasn't been tested. It works on my A1200 50MHz '030 (no fpu) Linux 2.0.22 with XFree68-3.2 so it should work for you too ;^) The sources for RXvt aren't included in this archive to keep the size down. If you want the sources then they are readily available from most ftp sites, but if you have any trouble then email me and i'll point you to the appropriate sites. If you do plan to recompile RXvt then good luck! I had an absolute nightmare trying to get this damn thing working! It was all supposed to be nice and simple...use GNU autoconf the docs said. I did. It didn't work. I tried just doing ./configure as the docs said. It didn't work. So in the end i hacked about a bit and actually managed to compile it! If you need some advice then i'd be happy to help, but don't expect a miracle if you can't get it working :^) Look out for my other X11 binaries for Linux/m68k which are all available from my homepage (or at least they should be ;^) Other stuff compiled by myself includes : Xvt-2.0 - The original 'no-frills' version of Xvt. RXvt-2.8 - What you've got your hands on now! AfterStep1.0pre2 - The best X11 window manager available! (IMHO) Xless-1.7 - An X version of less. XColors - Displays available colours on your X server (although i've never got it to display anything!) XColorSel - A kind of colour selector/mixer. Anyway, enjoy RXvt!
