WELCOME TO THE FREEDOS "BETA 2" (MARVIN) DISTRIBUTION! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ A few notes on the new FreeDOS distribution: This "Beta 2" (Marvin) distribution does not contain all of the up-to-date software that you will find on the FreeDOS maintainers list (http://www.isd.net/jhall1/freedos/lists.html). In fact, the "Beta 2" distribution is missing a few of the more recent programs such as the desktop. This is because the "Beta 2" release was assembled before these new programs or releases were posted. After the "Beta 2" has been out there for a while, I'll be able to assemble the new software and include the latest versions of everything. Then I'll put out a "Beta 2.1" distribution. Yes, that one will have a cute name, too. :) Floppy access with this kernel is still a little slow. If you think the install program has locked up on you, but the floppy drive light is on, just sit tight for a little while and things will start working again. One other thing: I didn't have time to do all the testing I wanted to with this release. Specifically, I did not test to see if the FDISK on the boot floppy really would create a DOS partition, or if the FORMAT on the boot floppy actually created a DOS filesystem. Sorry if this breaks for anyone. If you have problems with the install boot floppy, please send me an email (jhall1@isd.net) and let me know what's happened. I'll post these bug reports on my web page (http://www.isd.net/jhall1/freedos/) so that you can see what problems I'm already aware of. * A note on the cute names that I've used so far. I've had a few questions from people asking about them. This release is officially known as the "Beta 2" distribution. It's cute name is "Marvin", which is the name of the old timeshare system we had back in school when I was a student at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. "Marvin" was taken off-line about the same time that I started the FreeDOS project. The "Beta 1" distribution was also known as "Orlando". My brother lives in Orlando, Florida.
