As I suggested in my first message, I think the best course of action is 
to change the spec to match the compiler rather than the other way 
around.  If we instead alter the compiler to match the spec, it's 
possible that some assembly code that previously worked (even though it 
didn't follow the spec) will no longer work.  It will also render all 
existing libraries unlinkable against code compiled with a newer 
(spec-conformant) compiler.
