The July IETF meeting (25-29 July 1994) marks the eighth time that live
audio and video from the plenary and some working group sessions will
be multicast out across the Internet.  Two simultaneous working group
sessions will be transmitted on separate "channels."  Included below is
the "IETF TV Guide."

To receive this multicast, you must have an audio-capable workstation
(SPARC, SGI, DEC 5000) with IP multicast software added to the
operating system.  You must also be connected to the semi-permanent
virtual IP multicast network known as the MBone.  Since this effort has
been going on for some time now, we hope that all those who are
interested have already arranged to be connected.  If not, contact your
network provider to see if they are providing MBone connections, but
please don't be disappointed if they can't respond by the IETF.  The
MBone is currently structured to follow network topology to its best
ability.  Please don't break this structure by trying to connect just
anywhere. Contact your network provider for the best MBone connection
for you.

More information about the MBone, including what hardware and software
is required to receive the multicast, is available by anonymous FTP
from ftp.isi.edu in the file mbone/faq.txt.

For each of the two channels, "IETF Channel 1" and "IETF Channel 2",
there may be two concurrent multicast streams:

     - audio (IDV4)
     - video (one of two encodings; approximately 25 to 128 kbps)

Each of these streams will be be advertised as a session in the LBL
Session Directory tool (sd) which can be used to automatically invoke
the audio and video programs with the appropriate address and TTL
parameters.  The audio will be originated by the vat program from LBL;
you may use vat or any other vat-compatible application to listen in
and talk back.  For video, the latest version of the nv program from
Xerox PARC will be used.

Following is the tentative schedule of plenary meetings and working
group sessions to be transmitted; to interpret the acronyms, see the
agenda (available via FTP from ds.internic.net as
/ietf/0mtg-agenda.txt).  It is possible that this schedule will be
modified.

Advice for remote participants:

Please keep your microphones muted and your video transmissions
disabled during the plenaries and working group sessions, unless or
until invited to respond by the chair of the session.

Vat users can disable reception of accidental sources of audio
multicasts (such as people who forget to mute their mics) by clicking
in the box next to that source's name.

During plenary sessions, when there is only one audio stream, we may
run two video streams on the same video multicast channel, one with a
higher than normal TTL, to allow people who would normally receive
only two audio streams (i.e., threshold 128) to receive one audio plus
one video instead.

Any comments or reports of problems should be mailed to

in at the number below, but there is a strong preference for reporting
problems via e-mail.  We cannot promise to respond immediately, or at
