Download for MS Windows
You have two options getting yourself one of the most enjoyable TeX-oriented editing environments. A very easy one is downloading a precompiled version of Emacs including AUCTeX. You don't have to do much more than unpacking it before you can start editing. The way for real men (or women) having joy in setting everything up from scratch and getting their hands dirty (Yes, there are such people. The author of this page is one of them.) is to grab a copy of AUCTeX's sources and compile them yourself.
Precompiled Emacs/AUCTeX bundle
This is a precompiled development version of Emacs including AUCTeX providing the most feature-rich and functional combination available for Windows users. Please take the time to read through the release notes which will give you details on how to install this package.

AUCTeX distribution files
You can get the distribution files of the latest AUCTeX release including preview-latex as a zip archive along with a signature file for validation:
Note: If you want to install AUCTeX into Emacs' directory, make sure the info files are put into the info directory. In order to do that you will have to specify the --infodir option for the configuration script, e.g. like this:
./configure --prefix='C:/Program Files/Emacs' \ --with-texmf-dir='C:/localtexmf' \ --infodir='C:/Program Files/Emacs/info'
More information about options of the configuration script can be found in the installation instructions of AUCTeX or by executing configure --help.
If you are into XEmacs and want to spare yourself the hassle of building AUCTeX you can use the following ready-made XEmacs package.
auctex-11.84-pkg.tar.gz (signature)
AUCTeX's manual and reference card for key bindings can be found in the 11.84-extra directory as PostScript and PDF files.
Software requirements
In order to use AUCTeX the following software is required in addition:
- MSYS tools for building and installing.
-
A recent version of GNU Emacs or XEmacs (unless you downloaded the Emacs/AUCTeX bundle, of course):
For XEmacs, you need at least version 1.84 of the xemacs-base package (released on 01/27/2004) or a sumo tarball from or newer than 02/02/2004.
Also, please be aware that on Windows the display of images generated by preview-latex requires either XEmacs or a development version of GNU Emacs. The Emacs/AUCTeX bundle provided by the AUCTeX project (see above) includes such a version of Emacs. Other precompiled development versions of Emacs can be obtained e.g. from ourcomments.org.
-
A TeX system:
Two popular systems are MikTeX and proTeXt (based on MikTeX).
- Ghostscript for generating PostScript and other output. Required by preview-latex.
