GNU Rot[t]Log
How I did it
In the early days, when in Italy the only known distributions
were Slackware and Red Hat, and Debias was not still born,
I decided to know what means "Free Software" and
"Open Source". I've buy a copy of Slackware 3.3, and my
"Odyssey" was begin: two months to configure my integrated
graphic card and my used monitor (without users manual);
many days to understand what means "ppp connection" and
"DNS server"; many many time to know how to exactly configure
italian keyboard in all programs, and much more.
I've spent many months in reading HOWTOS and sparse
documentations. After some years I can say that I've understand
the core of Free Software philosophy:
If you need something, search for it, and if you don't
find anything useful to you, do it yourself!
And when you beleave that your production is useful to the world,
make it free and shareable:
The world will be a little bit better with your help!
So when I was tried by logs more and more growing on my box,
I've followed this philosophy: I've make a little log rotation
tool in BASH to meet my needs. It was the year 2000.
After some time spent in coding this little script, I've
completely forgot it. It have silently work for two years.
When I've decided to publish this code it was very little, and
its simple design have help me to develop it quickly.
Now Rot[t]Log have much more features than logrotate, and
(I think) it's very useful for administrator having a very
large number of logs. It has been developed with help of many
administrators aronud the world having all different needs.
My program try to acheive all these needs using an easy
syntax.
