tkwfd (word frequency display) ***** is a Tcl 7.3 /tk 3.6 based script to be used as a Unix (post)filter to show word frequencies. #Author: jlf@essi.fr (Ecole Sup'erieure en Sciences Informatiques) #Address: Sophia-Antipolis (France) #Date: June 1995 #Version: 1.0 #Public domain. No warranty Tkwfd assumes its standard input is fed with structured ASCII lines made of fields separated by spaces. As lines are coming, tkwfd recognizes new tokens and start counting their occurences. It then displays bar-graphs showing relative percentage of token matches ("word frequency"). --> tkwfd watches only one field at a time, thus same word appearing in another field is not taken into account. While it has primarily been made to give snoop (Solaris sniffer) graphical capabilities, its code is written in such a way that it does not rely on snoop output and it may be used as a general word frequency analyzer and display. The only requirement is that standard input has a regular structure, i.e. a constant number of fields (not entirely true for snoop). --> for using snoop, you must have root access on a Solaris machine. Measurements done with snoop + tkwfd are not that precise, as snoop and tkwfd both interact with network for doing their job. Operation: ********* There are two basic modes of operation: - continuous In this mode, display refreshing is done periodically. for invoking this mode, use tkwfd without argument (defaults to 100) or with an argument > 0 example: /usr/sbin/snoop | tkwfd or /usr/sbin/snoop | tkwfd 200 "200" means refresh display every 200 input lines (200 Ethernet packets in this case) fields of interest are: 0 ... source hosts 2 ... destination hosts 3 ... protocols Change interesting field by clicking button "-" or "+" - single pass In this mode, display is done once at standard input closing. for invoking this mode, use tkwfd with argument = 0 (zero) example: awk -F: '{print $4}' /etc/passwd | tkwfd 0 will run a single pass through /etc/passwd and display distribution of Unix groups among users -> Interesting field is field# 0 and cannot be changed. Examples: ******** smarter examples in tkwfd.examples Installation: ************ unshar edit wish path in the first line to meet your site requirements. make sure Unix mode is 755 and ... it's ready to run! Configuration: ************* You may change three variables in the code: - COLORLIST list of your preferred colors; choose how many colors you like. - increase MINTOKENS to suppress rare events: be aware MINTOKENS is not a percentage. - adapt MAXLINES to your display. It depends heavily on your default font. Bugs: **** known: Integer truncature errors make sum of percentages not always = 100% Bugs reports, English corrections... : e-mail jlf@essi.fr
