This file contains a list of North American companies that are interested in Smalltalk programmers. I don't have the time to call these companies and find out if the information is out of date, so PLEASE let me know when that happens. Just send e-mail to johnson@cs.uiuc.edu. Most of these companies hire Smalltalk programmers in small numbers. At any particular time only some of them will be hiring. Thus, send out lots of letters and see what happens. In general, the major consulting firms and Smalltalk venders are pretty picky about who they hire, so if you just have a year or so Smalltalk experience and are right out of school then it is probably no use to contact them. On the other hand, they might be needing extra people for a new project, so you never know. To get the latest edition of the list (it will probably change regularly) ftp it as /pub/Smalltalk/st-docs/smalltalk-jobs on st.cs.uiuc.edu. Experience: minimum 1 to 2 years Smalltalk (preferably PP VW2.0) working knowledge of methods (preferably OMT, Use Cases, design patterns) relational database design/SQL programming (preferably using Oracle7) working knowledge of Unix, Windows (maybe even the Mac!) Education: minimum BSCS/BSEE or equivalent (or be REAL smart) Some words about our company: We are a small, growing company dedicated to our employees. We pay good salaries (in relation to the cost of living) and provide two levels of profit sharing. The first level is pretty conventional. If there is money in the till at the end of the year, we spread it around. Each employee gets the same amount (assuming they worked a full year.) The second level is more unique. If you bring in a new client or develop a new product (anything legal - even the next Pet Rock for all I care - from which we can make money), you get 50% after expenses. If the client or product makes enough money to require sustaining staff, you will be given the opportunity to become either the managing or technical principal for what, in effect, becomes your own business within our business. Your compensation and position becomes a direct result of your creativity and your own internal motivation, NOT a result of ambiguous employee reviews. As a result, there are no annual performance reviews (unless we need to fire you because you cause too much trouble.) However, all this good will does come at some expense which we will explain to those who may fit into our somewhat bizarre culture. We are rapidly developing somewhat of a cult following with our clients due to the fact that we put love into our work. We honestly care about the success of our customers. This is the result of the fact we hire people, not skills. Smart, motivated people can always learn new skills. If you feel you are a marginal match for the above skills, let us hear from you - maybe your personality will win us over. However, if you have the skills AND a hired-gun, "you need me more than I need you" attitude, better check elsewhere. Primadonnas need not apply. We are all still learning, from our clients and from each other. If you are interested, get in touch. If you have already sent us a resume, we still have it and are reviewing it (really!) However, PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT SINCE WE ARE A VERY SMALL AND NEW COMPANY, THERE IS RISK ASSOCIATED WITH JOINING OUR COMPANY. If you are not able to handle the risk (very understandable), please save us both the trouble. Thank you for your kind consideration.
