Adam E. Shackleford 117 NW Trinity Place, Suite A Portland, Oregon 97209 (503) 227-3552 Internet: approach@aol.com -------------------------------------- Castle Microsloth 3.1a - July 22, 1994 -------------------------------------- It's an Adventure in VisualWorks -------------------------------- Castle Microsloth is a graphical, realtime adventure written in ParcPlace VisualWorks. It's implemented with a toolbox of 100+ adventure-building classes. Also incorporated are color icons, custom-drawn for the game by Susan Atherly (suediane@aol.com). Who Can Run It -------------- Castle Microsloth is provided at no charge under the terms of the GNU General Public License Version 2, June 1991. The text of that license is included in the distribution (see the file "COPYING".) It is provided in source-code form. You must have ParcPlace VisualWorks 1.x to compile and run it. The Objective ------------- Your character is applying for a job at a well-known software firm in the Pacific Northwest. Your objective: Survive the interview process and score Your Own Office (with a door!) ----------------- Starting The Game ----------------- 1. Start VisualWorks. 2. File-in the file Install.st, where "" specifies the location of the game files. Note: Install.st will correctly file-in the game regardless of the line-end convention used by your operating system. 3. A dialog will appear asking you to enter . Then, the game will compile. 4. Finally, an Adventure Launcher window will open. Select "Castle Microsloth" under the "File/New" menu to start a game. To start another Adventure Launcher at a later time, evaluate the following expression: AdventureLauncher open If you need them, additional instructions are available online. Enjoy! ---- Tips ---- 1. The game progresses in realtime, whether you do anything or not. Make liberal use of the "pause" and "resume" features. You pause or resume the game by selecting the "pause" or "resume" item of the "Game" menu. 2. Before you try anything risky, save the game. If you make a mistake, you can restore the saved game. See the "save as..." item of the "Game" menu. 3. Don't run the game with the "Default Look" look policy. "Default Look" insists on displaying its menu indicator bar even on readonly fields. This consumes screen space where none should be consumed, thus trashing the aesthetics of some of the game's displays. 4. Mac users may have trouble (hang/primitive failure) when displaying the game's larger bitmaps. This is caused by a bug in Mac VisualWorks. 5. To avoid file-in conflicts, global names (classes, etc.) in the game begin with either "Adventure," "Machine," or "Microsloth." 6. To run the game without problems, you should be running latest VM for your platform, and have installed all appropriate PPS patches to your image. 7. At present, the game is incompatible with the latest pre-release of VisualWorks 2.0. -------------- Special Thanks -------------- Special thanks to the following supporters: Laszlo Takacs (play testing,) Susan Atherly (graphics, game design and play testing,) Rik Smoody (play testing and UI suggestions,) David Reeder (play testing.) ------------------- Consulting Services ------------------- To inquire about my Smalltalk consulting services, please send email to approach@aol.com VisualWorks is a trademark of ParcPlace Systems
