This file contains a list of European companies that are interested in Smalltalk programmers. It is probably best to start with e-mail, where that is available, and then send a resume. I don't have the time to call these companies and find out if the information is out of date, so I will depend on you, my readers, to let me know when that happens. Just send e-mail to johnson@cs.uiuc.edu. Most of these companies hire Smalltalk programmers in small numbers. At any particular time only a few of them will be hiring. Thus, send out lots of letters and see what happens. To get the latest edition of the list (it will probably change regularly) ftp it as /pub/st-docs/smalltalk-jobs on st.cs.uiuc.edu. We, OO Partners, are a Belgian company specialising in OOT. Our company was founded in December 1992 as a Spin-off of the Free University of Brussels (VUB). The VUB is known for its top-rated computer science department, research labs and the connections it has with the industry. The VUB is the alma mater of hundreds of computer science professionals working in Belgium. In January 1993, we closed a deal with a commercial television station to develop a scheduling system using OOT and VisualWorks (4 developers for 14 months and project management). Two months later we became officially ParcPlace distributor for Belgium. Currently we are with 5 people, but we are looking for experienced Smalltalk developers to offer them a freelance job for a few months. Can you help us with this? The system that we are building for the television station includes a graphical user interface tool, e.g. to allow users to graphically allocate time slots. The program is linked to a database containing the television programs and scheduling, and all scheduling is done in consistency with this database. It will also support work flow functionality: when a program is scheduled, other users must be warned so they can order tapes, review the tapes and enter data in the system to further work out the planning for yet another user to add commercial blocks etc. We have found already another television station interested in this kind of application. We are strongly thinking about building a framework for this problem domain. We were also encouraged by Adele Goldberg to build frameworks for this market. And I believe that this is something you are interested in. Next week I will be at OOPSLA. Maybe we, or somebody else of your team, can meet somewhere? Holland? We (i.e. Philips Electron Optics) *might* (with emphasis on might) start a project for an new instrument using Smalltalk. As good Smalltalk programmers are hard to come by, we are possibly interested in hiring. As the project is in its infancy, nothing is certain (yet), but staffing will be one of the concerns in this phase. The preliminary schedule would call for start of development work somewhere in the fall.
