                 TITLE 42--THE PUBLIC HEALTH AND WELFARE

                    SUBCHAPTER I--GENERAL PROVISIONS
 
Sec. 2465c. Definitions

    For the purposes of sections 2465b to 2465f of this title--
        (1) the term ``launch vehicle'' means any vehicle constructed 
    for the purpose of operating in, or placing a payload in, outer 
    space; and
        (2) the term ``payload'' means an object which a person 
    undertakes to place in outer space by means of a launch vehicle, and 
    includes subcomponents of the launch vehicle specifically designed 
    or adapted for that object.

                          Codification

    Section was enacted as part of the National Aeronautics and Space 
Administration Authorization Act, Fiscal Year 1991, and also as part of 
the Launch Services Purchase Act of 1990, and not as part of the 
National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 which is classified 
principally to this chapter.


                               Amendments

    1998--Pars. (1) to (4). Pub. L. 105-303 redesignated pars. (3) and 
(4) as (1) and (2), respectively, and struck out former pars. (1) and 
(2) which read as follows:
    ``(1) the term `commercial provider' means any person providing 
launch services, but does not include the Federal Government;
    ``(2) the term `launch services' means activities involved in the 
preparation of a launch vehicle and its payload for space transport and 
the conduct of transporting a payload;''.
