     SUBCHAPTER IX--COMMUNITY SERVICE EMPLOYMENT FOR OLDER AMERICANS
 
Sec. 3056b. Participants without status of Federal employees; 
        contractual requirement of workmen's compensation
        
    (a) Eligible individuals who are employed in any project funded 
under this subchapter shall not be considered to be Federal employees as 
a result of such employment and shall not be subject to the provisions 
of part III of title 5.
    (b) No contract shall be entered into under this subchapter with a 
contractor who is, or whose employees are, under State law, exempted 
from operation of the State workmen's compensation law, generally 
applicable to employees, unless the contractor shall undertake to 
provide either through insurance by a recognized carrier, or by self-
insurance, as authorized by State law, that the persons employed under 
the contract shall enjoy workmen's compensation coverage equal to that 
provided by law for covered employment.

                            Prior Provisions

    A prior section 504 of Pub. L. 89-73, title V, as added Pub. L. 93-
29, title V, Sec. 501, May 3, 1973, 87 Stat. 51, provided for recapture 
of payments and was classified to section 3041c of this title, prior to 
repeal by Pub. L. 95-478, title V, Sec. 501(a), Oct. 18, 1978, 92 Stat. 
1558.

    1978--Subsec. (b). Pub. L. 95-478 struck out comma before ``shall 
enjoy''.
