There are two versions of the snd-util package in this
directory. snd-util-3.7.tar.gz is the official version
and it works with all OSS and OSS/Free releases.

snd-util-3.8-beta#.tar.gz (or snd-util-3.8.tar.gz) is
almost similar than version 3.7 but it contains
minor enhancements to couple of programs. In addition
first version of OSSlib (freeware version) is included
in it. OSSlib requires version 3.8-beta2 or later
of OSS driver to work.

What is OSSlib?
---------------

OSSlib is a simple library which supports loading
of General MIDI instruments to cards such as 
OPL3 or GUS. OSSlib is mainly intended for MIDI
persons writing MIDI software and who like to use
GUS, OPL3 and other synthesizer devices which
require patch loading. With OSSlib it's possible to
write MIDI programs so that it works without changes
with any synth devices to be introduced in future.
Look at the OSSlib/ and mplay/ subdirectories
(inside the package) for more info.
