To: malcolm@thokk.demon.co.uk From: bnb@gryphon.demon.co.uk Subject: Upload I have uploaded a copy of my perl front end to the demon batchftp service into ftp.demon.co.uk:/incoming. Filename: batch-ftpd and batch-ftpd.txt (this message) Suggested Directory: either /pub/linux/utils or /pub/linux/Demon Short: A frontend to demon's batchftp facility for Unix users Long Description: This Program takes requests from local users and forwards them to the Demon batch ftp facility. When the ftp is acknowledged the program automatically downloads the file, deletes the copy on demon and informs anybody that has requested it of its presence. This program has several advantages over the "normal" direct way of doing things, which are especially useful in a multiuser environment, or when a personal mail domain is in use. i) Users need not know the machines password in order to use the batchftp account. ii) Multiple requests for the same file will only be downloaded locally once. iii) A file will be downloaded as soon the main is recieved from the Demon batch ftp facility. The user who requested it does not have to be the one connecting, thus he does not have to make a special connection to get the file. iv) The demon's from address is always set to be "something.demon.co.uk", this avoids having to specify this in a reply to field when a personal domain name is in use (because batch ftp only lets *.demon.co.uk sites use it)
