I may be naive or I misunderstood here but I think if a company wants
to implement an open design then they should be prepared to distribute
the mods they made.
GPL/LGPL makes it possible for commercial interests to participate
in open projects without them comprosing the goals of GNU, which is
great.

Providing a back-door for commerce to profit from open designs
but have a handy "proprietary" changes tag to avoid contributing back
seem to go against the grain to me. Aren't they getting their cake
and eating it?

If a company doesn't want to take contribute to the open development and
wants to retain control of proprietary features they are
quite able to design their own IP the way they have always done. We don't
lose out because they weren't going to contribute anything back anyway!

Just my 2c.
