Do you mean that if the autonegotiation complete bit is set to one,  the highest speed bit available in the status is current mode?
So, when I config the phy, firstly i read the phy status, and I will get the available working mode and speed in the status register. Sceondly, if I want to config phy manually,I may write the available mode to control register, and by then configuration is finished.What I have written to the control register is the working mode. And if I want to let the phy autonegotiate ,I only need to write autonegotiation command to phy control register.After the phy status's autonegotiation complete bit is set to one, the configuration is finished. The highest bit set in the status register indicating the working mode.
Is it right?

After the AN completed, you can read the PHY status register to get such
kind of information.
