IADS/README This directory contains the Interactive Authoring and Display System (IADS) software, distributed on behalf of the International SGML Users' Group. This software is supplied "as is", and is not supported in any way by the International SGML Users' Group. The usual disclaimers apply regarding the use of the software. Users should also pay special attention to the licensing information on the IADS opening screen. "IADS is a Microsoft Windows application. It can run on any computer capable of running Microsoft Windows. An 80386 PC with at least 2M of memory is recommended for most applications. IADS uses SGML (ISO 8879 Standard Generalized Markup Language) as its internal file format for textual data. Both vector and raster graphics are supported through the CALS standard data formats MIL-D-28003 CGM and MIL-R-28002 RASTER TYPE I as well as other industry standard formats. IADS documents can be presented on screen in full color or black and white with support for multiple fonts." (IADS documentation, section 1.2 System Overview). The original distribution comes on three double density disks. Disks 1 and 2 contain the IADS Author/Reader software. Disk 3 contains the IADS DTD for Technical Manuals. For distribution over the network the contents of the disks were zipped -- with the DTD being added to the contents of disk 2. Hence this version of the distribution consists of the files shown in the contents list at the end of this document. [Note: "zipped" is no longer unambiguous, but there is no indication of which version of which program was used to collect the files. ] Installing IADS Get the files onto a suitably configured PC, and unzip them. You will need at least 5M of disk space to install IADS. From within the directory where you have stored the unzipped files, run the "install" command. This will start Windows and initiate the installation procedure. (It is also possible to install the software from within Windows, by using the File Manager to run WINSTALL.EXE). A dialog box will allow you to decide where IADS should be installed -- by default it will go in C:\IADS. At the end of the installation, the IADS applications will be added to the Windows Program Manager. To start playing with your new software, startup something like the IADS Author, read the license information, and login as "Guest". (It is possible to set up login/passwords for users to have different default documents loaded at startup. Consult the documentation for more information). Documentation IADS comes with an on-line help system. A copy of the printed documentation which accompanied the original distribution is available from the International SGML Users Group (documentation can be ordered with or without the original disks).
