At long last, here's the latest news on SGML and its ever-increasing presence in the computer industry. We apologize for the delay. PC Week, "Quark, Adobe show wares at Seybold," 19 April 1993, Paula Rooney. Computerworld, "Adobe to offer SGML translation tool," 19 April 1993, Michael Vizard. "Last week's announcement, made at the Seybold Seminar here, calls for Mountain View, Calif.-based Adobe to team up with Avalanche Development Co. in Boulder, Colo. Avalanche will provide software to convert documents created using Adobe's Portable Document Format (PDF) into an SGML-compliant format." PC Magazine, "Briefs," 25 May 1993, Mary Kathleen Flynn. "Adobe Systems is making the Standard Generalized Markup Language a key component of its desktop publishing tools strategy (Trends, April 13, 1993). The company has signed on Avalanche Development to map SGML to Adobe's Acrobat, which lets you view a document on virtually any platform." InfoWorld, "Graphics, SGML hot at Seybold show," 26 April 1993, Jeanette Borzo. Open Systems Today, "Adobe Adds Two Modules to Its Acrobat Viewer Team," 26 April 1993, Lee Bruno. "STRUCTURED DOCUMENTS [John] Dawes [Adobe product manager for Acrobat publishing products] said Adobe also is currently developing support in Acrobat for structured documents. With structured document capability, users will be able to create outlines, hypertext links and structure-based full-text search. To accomplish these product goals, Adobe said it has licensed technology from Avalanche Development, of Boulder, Colo., and Mastersoft, of Scottsdale, Ariz. Avalanche's products utilize the document interchange standard, Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) to create structured documents that can be searched for information. Adobe plans to add SGML tags to PDF files to help automate the process of full-text searches and generating outlines."
