WordPerfect Corporation had been a member since before its acquisition by Novell last year. When it was time to renew, WordPerfect took the membership opportunity to its parent organization. We sincerely appreciate the efforts put forth on our behalf by SGML Open friends and fans at WordPerfect and Novell." SGML Open is an international consortium of SGML vendors. It seeks to promote the use of SGML, educate the commercial market about the standard, and provide a forum where vendors can resolve interoperability issues. More information about SGML Open can be obtained by sending mail to Mary Laplante, Executive Director, sgmlopen@prep.net. OF LAW LIBRARIES EXAMINES INTERNET OPTIONS ========================================================== A recent newsletter from the American Association of Law Libraries discusses the organization's viewpoints on several Internet applications -- including the World Wide Web -- and how they are applicable to librarian-sponsored electronic document initiatives. It also addresses the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI), an SGML implementation. "SGML has some of the attributes of the proprietary typesetting markup used by printers to transform electronic text into printed books, but it is more far-reaching, open, and adaptable than any of those schemes... We are already experiencing the spread of SGML into our daily lives. HTML... the standard that supports WWW, is a very simple SGML implementation... During the next few years we should expect to see more and more use of SGML in publishing, both for the creation and distribution of electronic documents and for the production of traditional paper publications... This is only the beginning for the SGML revolution. The potential benefits of SGML are many and the implications for libraries enormous." The American Association of Law Libraries Newsletter, "The Internet Insert; Facing the Challenge of Electronic Documents," Stuart Spore, October 1994, Vol. 26, No. 2.
