Medium Document Production Instructions

Medium Document Production Instructions specify the media to be used for document presentation and the selection of the medium to be used for the presentation of each page image. The result of the Medium Declaration and Selection Process is the association of a medium with each ordinal page number. The placement of page images on instances of the media is specified in .

For web fed printers or other printers using continuous media, an instance of the medium is considered to be that portion of the medium on which a single page image can be placed. Such instances of the media would be separated by the Presentation Process after the page images are placed on them. Presentation Processes such as softcopy devices may place page images on virtual presentation surfaces which can then be viewed on the physical presentation surface. In such a system each virtual presentation surface is treated as a separate instance of the medium. The mapping of these virtual presentation surfaces to the physical display surface and the ability of the system to preserve a virtual presentation surface for future viewing are system dependent.

The specification of the media which are to be used for document presentation is a two step process.

  1. Each medium which may be used for the presentation of one or more pages is first declared by a Medium Declaration.
  2. The medium which is to be used for the presentation of each PAGE is selected by the Medium Select or Current Medium Document Production Instructions.

Medium Declaration

Each medium which may be used for the presentation of one or more pages is first declared by a Medium Declaration.

Medium Specification

A medium may be specified by a medium name, by a set of medium properties, or by a combination of medium name and medium properties.

For some of the medium properties, the set of values for which a meaning is specified may not include all of the possible values of the assigned type. A MEDIUM PROPERTIES structure element may specify a value for a medium property which is other than one of those for which a meaning is defined in so long as the value is of the appropriate type. The effect of such a medium property is system dependent.

A MEDIUM PROPERTIES structure element may also specify medium properties in addition to those defined by this International Standard. The effect of such a medium property is system dependent.

Selection of Physical Media

The primary means of medium identification is the MEDIUM NAME. The MEDIUM NAME may identify either a specific medium (such as a specific product) or a type of medium (such as ISO A4 paper). If the MEDIUM NAME identifies a specific medium, any additional properties are used for medium substitution only. If the MEDIUM NAME identifies a type of medium, other medium properties may be used to select from among the media of that type which are available to the Presentation Process. An example of a MEDIUM NAME which identifies a type of medium is the Public Object Identifier which identifies ISO A4 paper. Additional properties which might be used with this MEDIUM NAME value include medium weight and medium color.

If a MEDIUM SPECIFICATION does not include MEDIUM NAME value, then a medium is selected using the medium properties. The medium properties may be specified explicitly by a MEDIUM PROPERTIES structure element, implied by the medium name or medium type properties, or default values may be assumed. The medium properties which are defined by this International Standard are shown in . The method of assigning a medium to a MEDIUM SPECIFICATION which does not specify a MEDIUM NAME is system dependent.

The ability of systems to select media from an available repertoire is system dependent. There is no requirement for a system to have any particular repertoire of media available, or to be able to select media from a repertoire of available media. This International Standard specifies only how a system which can select from a repertoire of available media assigns a particular medium to a MEDIUM SPECIFICATION. A system may assign a single default medium, or a medium which depends on the current state of the system (e.g. whatever medium is in a particular input tray), to every MEDIUM SPECIFICATION.

Medium-list presentation parameter

The list of media which may be used for the presentation of a particular page of the document is specified by the current value of the medium-list presentation parameter. The medium-list presentation parameter is a list of name/medium pairs for which:

The default value of the medium-list presentation parameter is a null list. Each MEDIUM DECLARATION causes a name/medium pair to be added to the medium-list for the scope of the Medium Document Production Instruction.

Default medium

In addition to the media which are identified by Medium Declarations, there is a default medium for each instance of presentation. The means by which the default medium is established is outside of the scope of this International Standard. For a Presentation Process which is part of a ISO/IEC 10175 print service, the default medium may be set by the value of the default-medium Print Operation Parameter.

Association of Media with Ordinal Page Numbers

The result of the Medium Declaration and Selection Process is the association of a medium with each ordinal page number. The selection of the medium to be associated with each ordinal page number is determined by two presentation parameters:

The medium-select presentation parameter is set by the Medium Select Document Production Instruction, which is only valid in Supplementary DPI. The current-medium presentation parameter is set by the Current Medium Document Production Instruction, which is only valid in Document DPI.

Medium Selection by Medium Select

The medium-select presentation parameter is used to establish the association of a physical medium with each ordinal page number whenever there is a Medium Select Document Production Instruction for a particular instance of presentation. The value of the medium-select presentation parameter is a sequence of Names, which specifies the sequence of media to be used for the presentation of the pages of the entire document.

If there are n PAGEs in the document, then for 1≤in the medium associated with the ordinal page number i is determined from the medium-select, current-medium and medium-list presentation parameters as follows:

  1. if medium-select(i) is .notdef, the medium associated with the ordinal page number i is determined by the current-medium presentation parameter as specified below;
  2. if medium-select(i) is other than .notdef and there is an element of medium-list which binds the value of medium-select(i) to a physical medium, the medium associated with the ordinal page number i is the medium which is bound to the value of medium-select(i);
  3. if medium-select(i) is other than .notdef but there is no element of medium-list which binds the value of medium-select(i) to a physical medium, a structure warning occurs and the medium associated with the ordinal page number i is determined by the current-medium presentation parameter.

Medium Selection by Current Medium

The current-medium presentation parameter is used to establish the association of a physical medium with each ordinal page number whenever there is no Medium Select Document Production Instruction for a particular instance of presentation or whenever the value of the medium-select presentation parameter fails to specify a medium. The value of the current-medium presentation parameter is a single Name, which specifies the medium to be used for the presentation of the current BLOCK.

If there are n PAGEs in the document and if the value of the current-medium presentation parameter during the processing of the PAGE which is assigned the ordinal page number i is current-medium(i), then for 1≤in the medium associated with the ordinal page number i is determined from the current-medium and medium-list presentation parameter as follows

  1. if current-medium(i) is .notdef, the medium associated with the ordinal page number i is the default medium;
  2. if current-medium(i) is other than .notdef and there is an element of medium-list which binds the value of current-medium(i) to a physical medium, the medium associated with the ordinal page number i is the medium which is bound to the value of current-medium(i);
  3. if current-medium(i) is other than .notdef but there is no element of medium-list which binds the value of current-medium(i) to a physical medium, a structure warning occurs and the medium associated with the ordinal page number i is the default medium.

Medium Document Production Instruction

The Medium Document Production Instruction identifies media which may be used in document processing.

MEDIUM DPI

The Medium Document Production Instruction shall be represented by a MEDIUM DPI structure element. A MEDIUM DPI structure element shall be a composite structure element which shall have the following immediate subordinates:

MEDIUM DECLARATION

A MEDIUM DECLARATION structure element shall be a composite structure element which shall have the following immediate subordinates:

The immediate subordinates shall occur in the above order.

MEDIUM IDENTIFIER

A MEDIUM IDENTIFIER structure element shall be a base structure element. The value of a MEDIUM IDENTIFIER structure element shall be of type Name.

MEDIUM Document Production Instruction Processing

The effect of the Medium Document Production Instruction shall be to append or replace an element in the medium-list presentation parameter for each MEDIUM DECLARATION which is immediately subordinate to the MEDIUM DPI structure element. For each such MEDIUM DECLARATION, the effect shall be as follows.

  1. If there is no name/medium pair in the current medium-list for which the name is the same as the value of MEDIUM IDENTIFIER in the MEDIUM DECLARATION, the effect shall be to append a name/medium pair to the medium-list for which
    • the name is the same as the value of the MEDIUM IDENTIFIER in the MEDIUM DECLARATION;
    • the medium is the physical medium in the repertoire of the Presentation Process which best satisfies the MEDIUM DECLARATION;

    for the scope of the Medium Document Production Instruction.

  2. If there is a name/medium pair in the current medium-list for which the name is the same as the value of MEDIUM IDENTIFIER in the MEDIUM DECLARATION, the effect shall be to replace that name/medium pair with a new name/medium pair for which
    • the name is the same as the value of the MEDIUM IDENTIFIER in the MEDIUM DECLARATION;
    • the medium is the physical medium in the repertoire of the Presentation Process which best satisfies the MEDIUM DECLARATION;
    for the scope of the Medium Document Production Instruction.
If two MEDIUM DECLARATION structure elements in different BLOCKs have the same subordinate MEDIUM IDENTIFIER value, the MEDIUM DECLARATION in the subordinate BLOCK takes precedence for the scope of that DPI DECLARATION.

Medium Document Production Instruction Reconciliation

A Medium Document Production Instruction is meaningful in any PAGE or PAGESET or in Supplementary DPI. Any Medium Document Production Instruction which occurs elsewhere is ignored.

If the value of the MEDIUM IDENTIFIER of a MEDIUM DECLARATION of a Supplementary Medium Document Production Instruction has the same value as the MEDIUM IDENTIFIER of the MEDIUM DECLARATION of a Document Medium Document Production Instruction, the MEDIUM DECLARATION in the Supplementary DPI shall take precedence.

Medium Document Production Instruction Fallback

There is no fallback required for the Medium Document Production Instruction.

MEDIUM SPECIFICATION

A MEDIUM SPECIFICATION structure element shall be a composite structure element which shall have the following immediate subordinates:

At least one of the immediate subordinates shall be present. The immediate subordinates may occur in any order.

MEDIUM NAME

A MEDIUM NAME structure element shall be a base structure element. The value of a MEDIUM NAME structure element shall be of type Environment Identifier.

The value of a MEDIUM NAME structure element shall identify a medium as a whole. Public Object Identifier values for MEDIUM NAME are defined by ISO/IEC 10175 as standard values for the attribute medium. The Public Object Identifier values defined by ISO/IEC 10175 and the meaning of those values are described in (informative).

MEDIUM MESSAGE

A MEDIUM MESSAGE structure element shall be a base structure element. The value of a MEDIUM MESSAGE structure element shall be of type Printable String.

The MEDIUM MESSAGE specifies a message which may describe the medium, the suggested fallback action, or provide other information. It is intended that this message be delivered to an operator prior to and as close as possible to the printing of the document.

A MEDIUM MESSAGE shall have no effect on medium selection, but may effect printing management. The effect of a MEDIUM MESSAGE on printing management shall be system dependent.

MEDIUM SPECIFICATION Processing

MEDIUM SPECIFICATION processing consists of identifying a physical medium in the environment of the Presentation Process on the basis of the medium properties.

MEDIUM PROPERTIES

Medium properties are specified by a MEDIUM PROPERTIES structure element. A MEDIUM PROPERTIES structure element shall be a composite structure element which shall have the following immediate subordinates:

MEDIUM SIZE

A MEDIUM SIZE structure element shall be an XYDIMENSIONS structure element.

The MEDIUM SIZE structure element specifies a value for the medium-size medium property. The value of the medium-size medium property specifies the size of a rectangular medium and the relationship of the Reference Coordinate System to an instance of the medium. The value of the medium-size property shall be an ordered pair of Numbers. A medium-size medium property value of (x, y) specifies that the size of the medium is x mm by y mm, and that the Reference Coordinate System is associated with each instance of the medium in such a way that:

Public Object Identifier values for medium-size are defined by ISO/IEC 10175 as standard values for the attribute medium-size. The Public Object Identifier values which are defined by ISO/IEC 10175 for the attribute medium-size and the meaning of those values are provided in (informative).

The default value of the medium-size medium property shall be system dependent. Commonly, the default will be either (216, 279) specifying 8 inch by 11 inch paper, or (210, 297), specifying ISO A4 paper.

MEDIUM COLOR

A MEDIUM COLOR structure element shall be a base structure element. The value of a MEDIUM COLOR structure element shall be of type Environment Identifier.

A MEDIUM COLOR structure element specifies the value of the medium-color medium property. The value of the medium-color medium property specifies the color of the medium. Public Object Identifier values for medium-color are defined by ISO/IEC 10175 as standard values for the attribute medium-colour. The Public Object Identifier values which are defined by ISO/IEC 10175 for the attribute medium-colour and the meaning of those values are provided in (informative).

The default value of the medium-color medium property shall be dpi::medium::colour::white.

MEDIUM WEIGHT

A MEDIUM WEIGHT structure element shall be a composite structure element which shall have the following immediate subordinates:

MEDIUM WEIGHT VALUE

A MEDIUM WEIGHT VALUE structure element shall be a base structure element. The value of a MEDIUM WEIGHT VALUE structure element shall be of type Cardinal.

MEDIUM WEIGHT TOLERANCE

A MEDIUM WEIGHT TOLERANCE structure element shall be a base structure element. The value of a MEDIUM WEIGHT TOLERANCE structure element shall be of type Cardinal.

MEDIUM WEIGHT Processing

A MEDIUM WEIGHT structure element specifies the value of the medium-weight medium property.

The medium-weight medium property specifies the weight of the medium in grams per square meter (gm/m2), rounded to the nearest conventional value.

The default value of the medium-weight medium property shall be system dependent. Commonly, the default will be 75, which is equivalent to paper which is identified as "substance 20", or "20 lb".

MEDIUM TYPE

A MEDIUM TYPE structure element shall be a base structure element. The value of a MEDIUM TYPE structure element shall be of type Environment Identifier.

A MEDIUM TYPE structure element specifies the value of the medium-type medium property. The value of the medium-type medium property identifies the general type of of the medium, such as paper, adhesive backed medium, continuous form paper, or envelopes. Public Object Identifier values for MEDIUM TYPE are defined by ISO/IEC 10175 as standard values for the attribute medium-type. The Public Object Identifier values which are defined by ISO/IEC 10175 for the attribute medium-type are and the meaning of those values are provided in (informative).

The default value of the medium-type medium property shall be dpi::medium::type::stationery.

MEDIUM TOOTH

A MEDIUM TOOTH structure element shall be a base structure element. The value of a MEDIUM TOOTH structure element shall be of type Environment Identifier.

A MEDIUM TOOTH structure element specifies the value of the medium-tooth medium property. The value of the medium-tooth medium property specifies the tooth of the medium. Public Object Identifier values for MEDIUM TOOTH are defined by ISO/IEC 10175 as standard values for the attribute medium-tooth. The Public Object Identifier values which are defined by ISO/IEC 10175 for the attribute medium-tooth and the meaning of those values are provided in (informative).

The default value of the medium-tooth medium property shall be system dependent.

MEDIUM GRAIN

A MEDIUM GRAIN structure element shall be a base structure element. The value of a MEDIUM GRAIN structure element shall be of type Environment Identifier.

A MEDIUM GRAIN structure element specifies the value of the medium-grain medium property. The value of a MEDIUM GRAIN structure element identifies the grain of the medium. Public Object Identifier values for MEDIUM GRAIN are defined by ISO/IEC 10175 as standard values for the medium-grain attribute. The default value of the medium-grain medium property shall be system dependent.

MEDIUM PRE-PUNCH

A MEDIUM PRE-PUNCH structure element shall be a composite structure element which shall have the following immediate subordinates:

PUNCH COUNT

A PUNCH COUNT structure element shall be a base structure element. The value of a PUNCH COUNT structure element shall be of type Cardinal.

PUNCH EDGE

A PUNCH DIAMETER structure element shall be a DIMENSION structure element.

PUNCH OFFSET

A PUNCH OFFSET structure element shall be a DIMENSION structure element.

PUNCH LOCATIONS

A PUNCH LOCATIONS structure element shall be a HEAD LOCATIONS structure element. The number of Non-Negative Numbers shall be the same as the value of PUNCH COUNT.

MEDIUM PRE-PUNCH Processing

A MEDIUM PRE-PUNCH structure element specifies the value of the medium-pre-punch medium property. The medium-pre-punch medium property specifies the selection of a medium with one or more pre-punched or pre-drilled holes. The holes are inline as in the case of a sheet used for ring binding.

A MEDIUM PRE-PUNCH structure element for which the value of PUNCH COUNT is non-zero specifies a value for the medium-pre-punch medium property for which the punch count is the value of the PUNCH COUNT structure element and for which the punch parameters are as follows.

The default value of the medium-pre-punch medium property shall have punch count equal to zero. The medium-pre-punch medium property is optional. If no value is specified, the medium shall have no pre-punched or pre-drilled holes.

MEDIUM MULTI-PART

A MEDIUM MULTI-PART structure element shall be a composite structure element which shall have the following immediate subordinates:

SEQUENCE NUMBER

A SEQUENCE NUMBER structure element shall be a base structure element. The value of a SEQUENCE NUMBER structure element shall be of type Cardinal.

SEQUENCE LENGTH

A SEQUENCE LENGTH structure element shall be a base structure element. The value of a SEQUENCE LENGTH structure element shall be of type Cardinal.

MEDIUM MULTI-PART Processing

A MEDIUM MULTI-PART structure element specifies the value of the medium-multi-part medium property. The medium-multi-part medium property is meaningful only when the value of MEDIUM TYPE specifies a multi-part medium.

The medium-multi-part medium property may specify either

An example of a medium of the first type is fifth-cut tab stock with all of the tabs cut in the first (or second, or third) position. An example of a medium of the second type is fifth-cut tab stock which is packaged in collated form (a sheet of tab stock with the tab cut in the first position, followed by a sheet of tab stock with the tab cut in the second position, etc.).

A value of the medium-multi-part medium property shall consist of:

A MEDIUM MULTI-PART structure element specifies a value for the medium-multi-part medium property for which:

A medium-multi-part medium property for which the value of sequence number is n and the value of sequence length is m specifies that the medium is the nth of m media of a particular multi-part type which are managed as separate media. A medium-multi-part medium property for which the value of sequence number is zero specifies that the medium consists of collated sequentially accessed media of a particular type. In this case the value of the sequence length helps to identify the medium (e.g. to distinguish third-cut tab stock from fifth-cut tab stock).

  • The use of a MEDIUM MULTI-PART property for which the value of SEQUENCE NUMBER is non-zero implies independent access to each of the parts. In general, this requires the printer to use a separate tray for each part.
  • If collated sequentially accessed media are used, the output for multiple copies may depend on how copies are made. For example, a system which uses a sorter will generally produce different results than one which images all pages of one copy followed by all pages of the next copy.

    The medium-multi-part medium property is optional.

    MEDIUM FINISHED EDGES

    A MEDIUM FINISHED EDGES structure element shall be a composite structure element which shall have the following immediate subordinates:

    • one to four FINISHED EDGE structure elements.

    FINISHED EDGE

    A FINISHED EDGE structure element shall be a composite structure element which shall have the following immediate subordinates:

    • one EDGE IDENTIFIER structure element;
    • zero or one EDGE FINISH TYPE structure element.

    The immediate subordinates may occur in any order.

    EDGE IDENTIFIER

    An EDGE IDENTIFIER structure element shall be an EDGE structure element.

    EDGE FINISH TYPE

    An EDGE FINISH TYPE structure element shall be a base structure element. The value of an EDGE FINISH TYPE structure element shall be of type Environment Identifier. There are no Object Names for which Public Object Identifier values for EDGE FINISH TYPE are defined by this International Standard.

    MEDIUM FINISHED EDGES Processing

    A MEDIUM FINISHED EDGE structure element specifies the value of the medium-finished-edges medium property. The medium-finished-edges medium property specifies one or more finished edges of the medium and the ways in which those edges have been finished. The medium-finished-edges medium property may be used for the purposes of identifying and physically orienting certain types of media (such as a medium with a deckled edge).

    MEDIUM LABELS

    A MEDIUM LABELS structure element shall be a composite structure element which shall have the following immediate subordinates:

    • one PER COLUMN structure element;
    • one PER ROW structure element.

    The immediate subordinates may occur in any order.

    PER COLUMN

    A PER COLUMN structure element shall be a base structure element. The value of a PER COLUMN structure element shall be of type Cardinal.

    PER ROW

    A PER ROW structure element shall be a base structure element. The value of a PER ROW structure element shall be of type Cardinal.

    MEDIUM LABELS Processing

    A MEDIUM LABELS structure element specifies the value of the medium-labels medium property. The medium-labels medium property is meaningful only when the value of MEDIUM TYPE specifies a type of label stock.

    The medium-labels medium property specifies the layout of pre-cut labels on a type of medium commonly referred to as label stock. A medium-labels value for which labels-per-column is n and labels-per-row is m specifies a medium which consists of label stock which contains n × m pre-cut labels per sheet: n pre-cut labels per column and m pre-cut labels per row.

    A MEDIUM LABELS structure element shall specify a value for the medium-labels medium property for which:

    • labels-per-column is the value of the PER COLUMN structure element;
    • labels-per-row the value of the PER ROW structure element.

    ADDITIONAL PROPERTY

    The MEDIUM PROPERTIES structure element may specify additional medium properties by means of one or more ADDITIONAL PROPERTY structure elements. The effect of such ADDITIONAL PROPERTY structure elements is system dependent.

    An ADDITIONAL PROPERTY structure element shall be a composite structure element which shall have the following immediate subordinates:

    • one PROPERTY NAME structure element;
    • zero or one PROPERTY VALUE structure elements.

    The immediate subordinates may occur in any order.

    PROPERTY NAME

    A PROPERTY NAME structure element shall be a base structure element. The value of a PROPERTY NAME structure element shall be of type Public Object Identifier.

    PROPERTY VALUE

    A PROPERTY VALUE structure element may be either a base structure element or a composite structure element. The PROPERTY VALUE structure element shall depend on the value of the PROPERTY NAME structure element.

    Medium Select Document Production Instruction

    The Medium Select Document Production Instruction shall be represented by a MEDIUM SELECT DPI structure element.

    MEDIUM SELECT DPI

    A MEDIUM SELECT DPI structure element shall be a composite structure element which shall have the following immediate subordinates:

    • zero or more MEDIUM SELECTION structure elements.

    MEDIUM SELECTION

    A MEDIUM SELECTION structure element shall be a composite structure element which shall have the following immediate subordinates:

    • one START PAGE structure element;
    • one END PAGE structure element;
    • one MEDIUM IDENTIFIER structure element.

    These structure elements may occur in any order.

    For each MEDIUM SELECT structure element, the value of the immediately subordinate END PAGE structure element shall be greater than or equal to the value of START PAGE structure element, and the value of the immediately subordinate START PAGE structure element shall be larger than the value of the END PAGE structure element which is subordinate to the immediately preceding MEDIUM SELECTION (if any).

    START PAGE

    A START PAGE structure element shall be a PAGE IDENTIFIER structure element.

    END PAGE

    An END PAGE structure element shall be a PAGE IDENTIFIER structure element.

    PAGE IDENTIFIER

    A PAGE IDENTIFIER structure element shall be a base structure element. The value of a PAGE IDENTIFIER structure element shall be of type Positive Integer.

    MEDIUM IDENTIFIER

    A MEDIUM IDENTIFIER structure element shall be a base structure element. The value of a MEDIUM IDENTIFIER structure element shall be of type Environment Identifier.

    Medium Select Document Production Instruction Processing

    The effect of the MEDIUM SELECT DPI shall be to set the value of the medium-select presentation parameter. If the value of the START PAGE which is subordinate to the nth MEDIUM SELECTION is start-pagen, the value of the END PAGE whch is subordinate to the nth MEDIUM SELECTION is end-pagen, and the value of the MEDIUM IDENTIFIER which is subordinate to the nth MEDIUM SELECTION is medium-namen, then the value of medium-select shall be obtained by:

    1. setting the initial value of the medium-select presentation parameter to
    2. medium-select(i) = .notdef for all values of i;
    3. for each MEDIUM SELECTION, setting
    4. medium-select(i) = Medium-Namen for all values of i for which start-pageniend-page n.

    If there are no subordinate MEDIUM SELECTION structure elements, the value of the medium-select presentation parameter shall be medium-select(i) = .notdef for all values of i.

    Medium Select Document Production Instruction Reconciliation

    The Medium Select Document Production Instruction is meaningful only in a DOCUMENT or in Supplementary DPI. Any Medium Select Document Production Instruction which occurs in a BLOCK which is not a DOCUMENT shall be ignored.

    Medium Select Document Production Instruction Fallback

    There is no fallback required for the Medium Select Document Production Instruction.
