Ubiratan D'Ambrosio is Professor
Emeritus of the State University of Campinas/ UNICAMP in São
Paulo. Born in Brazil, he received his PhD. In Mathematics in
1963, and continued his research in the Istituto Matematico of
the University of Genoa and at Brown University. He was a Associate
Professor of mathematics at SUNY-Buffalo, Professor of Mathematics
and Director of the Institute of Mathematics at UNICAMP, Visiting
Professor of Mathematics at the University of Ilinois, Chicago,
Visiting Professor at the Regional University of Blumenau, and
Post-graduate Professor at the Catholic University of São
Paulo. In addition to academics, he has held important positions
in international commissions and societies: Chief of the Unit
of Curriculum of the Organization of American States (OAS) in
Washington; President of the Interamerican Committee of Mathematics
Education (IACME), President of the Latin American Society for
the History of Science and Technology; President of the Brazilian
Society of History of Science; a member of the Council of the
Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs (an organization
that was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1995), and a member
of the Governing Board of the Institute for Information Technology
in Education (IITE) of UNESCO. He is a Fellow of the American
Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). In 2001 he
was awarded the Kenneth O. May Medal of History of Mathematics.
He is currently President of the Brazilian Society of History
of Mathematics and President of the Institute for Future Studies.
He continues his teaching activities currently as a Professor
at the Pontificia Universidade Católica de São
Paulo and as an invited lecturer nad graduate advisor at the
Universidade de São Paulo and the Universidade Estadual
Paulista at Rio Claro. He is the author of Education for a
Society in Transition (Campinas, Papirus); Etnomathematics:
A Bond Between Traditions and Modernity (Belo Horizonte,
Autêntica, 2001); Etnomatematica, with a preface
by Bruno D'Amore (Pitagora Editrice, Bologna, 2002), and many
others.
