Pythagorean triangle provides all the dimensions.
a. place against the back wall
a 12x12 square;
b. the diagonal of the square
is 17 piedi. This defines the distance to the front of
c. the hypotenuse rope is swung out
perpendicular to wall to mark the back of the pier at 15 piedi.
The depth of the pier is thus 2 piedi. The width of the
pier is simply 12 - 9 = 3 piedi.
