a. place against the back wall a 12x12 square;
b. the diagonal of the square is 17 piedi. This defines the distance to the front of the piers;
c. the hypotenuse rope is swung out perpendicular to wall to mark the back of the pier at 15 piedi. The depth of the pier is thus 2 piedi. The width of the pier is simply 12 - 9 = 3 piedi.
