Metacosm project history

At the beginning, there were classical MUD and RPG. Most of us played a lot.

Some began to give in to the other side: Ruffy and Elkine started coding (while keeping on playing of course!) for a MUD in C named ZHeroeZ. They were finding it too limited, though. Janselmeer was playing a lot.

Others like Entropizer and Horus didn't play much on ZHeroeZ because of its limitations, which they found too prohibitve.

While Ruffy and Elkine were developing for ZHeroeZ, Entropizer, Janselmeer and Horus started the JA.M.B.O.N. project (JAva Mud Based On Nothing, ham in French). The project was aimed at designing and implementing a "next-generation" MUD but at that time, the discussions stayed pretty much high-level.

Not long after, Ruffy, Elkine and some others decided to start a new MUD project in parallel which was supposed to be coded in C++. They were hesitating between porting ZHeroeZ to C++ or developing something new. The project was codenamed utopie (French for utopia which is also why our mailing-list is so called). The MUD issued of that work was to be called SINS (SINS is Next Sin).

After some cross-project discussions, it was decided that the two projects were to be merged: the hybrid project kept the JA.M.B.O.N codename and started new discussions on the utopie mailing-list. The goals evolved to the ones posted on the goals page. The first instances of the framework are planned to be ZHeroeZ and SINS.

The project has then evolved and has taken the Metacosm name.
