Trolltech live that way. It produice the Qt library used by KDE. There are a GPL version and a closed one. There fame come from the GPL version, and thousand of people are there to debug there product. They employ ~80 peoples, so there are too fast too lose the leadership of the project.

(from my point of view, GPL with specific API for closed code (like for the linux kernel and it's proprietary modules), is the best licence, BSD imply that every body could "steal" you're code with nothing in return (like with the BSD tools in Windows NT))
