There was a discussion a few months back on this list noting that 
gcc/gdb did not follow the ABI in the architecture manual.  I believe 
the decision was to revise the architecture manual in the next release 
rather than to change gcc/gdb, so that any existing, hand-written 
assembly code would not need to be re-written.
